Elder-Mediated Conflict Resolution in the Dagbon Traditional Area: Effectiveness and Implications for Formal Justice
Yakubu, A. & Iddrisu, A.
This paper examines the effectiveness of elder-mediated conflict resolution in the Dagbon traditional area of Northern Ghana, comparing outcomes with formal court processes. Drawing on a longitudinal study of 186 mediated disputes, the research demonstrates a 78% sustainable resolution rate for traditional mechanisms compared to 34% for formal courts. The findings suggest that traditional approaches offer distinct advantages in community-level disputes due to their accessibility, cultural legitimacy, and restorative focus.

Women's Roles in Traditional Conflict Resolution: Evidence from Northern Ghana
Salifu, F. & Yakubu, A.
Despite the patriarchal structure of traditional governance in Northern Ghana, women play significant, if often invisible, roles in conflict resolution processes. This study documents the mediation activities of queen mothers, market women leaders, and female elders in the Mamprugu, Dagbon, and Gonja traditional areas.
