Youth Peace Workshop Series - Tamale

Location: Tamale Metropolitan Area

Background

Urban youth in Tamale face unique conflict challenges including political violence during elections, ethnic tensions in cosmopolitan neighbourhoods, and gang-related disputes. The Youth Peace Workshop Series was designed to equip young people aged 15-25 with conflict resolution skills relevant to their urban context.

Activities

  • Conducted 8 intensive 3-day workshops reaching 240 young people
  • Trained 30 youth peace ambassadors in peer mediation
  • Established 5 neighbourhood peace committees
  • Organised a city-wide peace festival and cultural exchange

Outcomes

Participant surveys showed a 67% increase in self-reported conflict resolution confidence. The trained youth ambassadors have subsequently mediated 45 disputes in their communities, with an 80% resolution rate. Two of the neighbourhood peace committees have been formally recognised by the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly.
