Dagbon Chieftaincy Peace Process

Dagbon Chieftaincy Peace Process

Location: Yendi, Northern Region

Background

The Dagbon chieftaincy dispute, one of the most protracted conflicts in Ghana's history, has its roots in succession disagreements between the Abudu and Andani royal gates dating back to the early 20th century. The conflict intensified with the assassination of Ya-Naa Yakubu Andani II in 2002, creating deep divisions within the Dagbon traditional area.

Activities

  • Facilitated 12 community dialogue sessions across Yendi and surrounding communities
  • Conducted oral history documentation of both royal gates' perspectives
  • Organised 3 inter-community reconciliation ceremonies
  • Provided mediation support to the Dagbon Overlord Committee

Outcomes

The Institute's mediation support contributed to the successful enskinment of the new Ya-Naa in 2019 and the subsequent peace agreement between the royal gates. Post-agreement monitoring indicates sustained peace with a 92% reduction in conflict-related incidents in the traditional area.
