Community Dialogue Initiative
Restoring harmony through structured conversation
The Community Dialogue Initiative facilitates structured inter-community dialogues using traditional mediation frameworks to address longstanding disputes related to land, chieftaincy, ethnicity, and resource access across Northern Ghana.
Objectives
- Mediate 50 community-level conflicts annually
- Achieve sustainable resolution in 75% of mediated cases
- Build a network of 100 trained community mediators
- Document mediation processes for research and replication
Approach
The CDI employs the Zaamani Integrated Peace Process (ZIPP), a five-phase methodology that combines traditional mediation protocols with contemporary conflict analysis tools. Each dialogue process is co-facilitated by trained Institute mediators working alongside traditional authorities recognised by the communities involved.
Focus Areas
- Land and boundary disputes between communities
- Chieftaincy succession conflicts
- Inter-ethnic tensions and historical grievances
- Natural resource access and management disputes
- Farmer-herder conflicts
Impact
Since 2020, the CDI has facilitated dialogue in 32 communities, successfully mediating 186 conflicts with a 78% sustainable resolution rate. The programme has been particularly effective in addressing land disputes, where its combination of customary and formal approaches has produced durable agreements.
